Andalusian Festivals in May

We told you recently that Reserva del Higuerón had the privilege of being in an area full of history and culture that attracts thousands of people. But this land of Andalusia always goes further and good weather comes with many parties that you should go to, at least some of them.

The month of May could be changed to Andalusia name, because this month is full of flowers in each and every one of the festivals. There are events full of folklore, music, incredible weather and flowers, lots of flowers.

Córdoba is one of the provincial capitals that is full of flowers in May. Two weekends ago, it gave the starting gun towards May with the Montilla-Moriles Wine Tasting and this weekend The May Crosses were held (they end was yesterday, May 1). We hope that you have been able to enjoy, if you knew it, the streets of Cordoba full of May Crosses and party in any corner. But don’t worry, because this is not the end of it all, yesterday was the start of The Courtyards Festival of Cordoba, a competition for courtyard decorations. This festival has been declared Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO and brings together more than 1 million people each year. You will have from May 1st to May 13th to visit this incredible festival.

Granada gives us flowers with The Granada Crosses. One day after Cordoba, this city celebrates the feast of the Cross of May in a springtime atmosphere as well as colorful. On May 3, the streets, squares and balconies are dressed in flowers showing an explosion of colors and life. During this day it is normal to see people dressed in flamenco costumes and the crosses are mainly made of carnations. There is a competition in which the different crosses compete to be the best within 4 modalities: crosses in streets and squares, shop windows, schools and courtyards.

The Feria de Abril in Sevilla ended a week ago, but now in May a fair that takes centre stage begins, the Horse Fair in Jeréz de la Frontera. All the events and activities that are organized are related to the world of horses, the nobility of these has made it internationally known. Among the activities you can enjoy are jumping competitions, horse riding rallies, cattle shows and dressage. During the day you will be able to see a great number of horsemen and horsewomen, as well as carriages that walk around the fairgrounds giving an image and show to the event. This year the fairground will have more than 190 stands where you can enjoy wine, Andalusian food, sevillanas dances, etc. In addition, there will also be the attractions area and you will be able to see bullfighting shows and we recommend you to see the lighting on the night of May 5th. It lasts from 5 May to 12 May.

And soon we will see the pilgrims on their way to the Pilgrimage of El Rocío. This pilgrimage is a mixture of a religious path and a popular festival. Many people make this pilgrimage either on horseback, by cart or on foot in Almonte and Doñana, those who do so are called “rocieros”. This festivity never has the same date since it is celebrated on the weekend before Monday of “Pentecostés”, whose date in 2018 is May 20th. It is a festival full of dances, singing and is a scene typical of Andalusian folklore (for the festive part) and join with the prayers and promises to the Virgen del Rocío, known as the “Blanca Paloma”.
